Peasholme Green Proposed Toucan Crossing
Overview
We’re inviting residents, businesses, and stakeholders on Peasholme Green to talk to us about proposed changes aimed at improving safety, accessibility, and the look and feel of the area.
These ideas are based on concerns raised locally, and we want to make sure the final design reflects what you think will work best and what is required.
What We’re Proposing
The key features of the proposal are:
- Introduction of a new signalised pedestrian and cycle toucan crossing on Peasholme Green.
- Improvements to pedestrian and cycle facilities linking to key pedestrian and cycle routes by segregating pedestrians (including mobility-aid users) and cyclists away from traffic and giving them priority at junctions.
- Modifications to the Aldwark junction to improve off-road connectivity for pedestrians (including mobility-aid users) and cyclists and general road safety improvements, achieved by realigning the junction to better control vehicle speeds and by enlarging paved areas to accommodate the additional pedestrian and cycle facilities.
- Modifications to the Dundas Street junction to prioritise and improve cycle connectivity into the city centre, achieved by realigning the junction and providing an extended cycle lane across the mouth of Dundas Street with cyclists having priority over vehicles.
- Improved signage, additional seating and cycle stands.
- Paving to compliment the historic nature of some of the buildings and to provide consistency of materials throughout.
- Changing the position of the raised Edible York flower bed and replacing it with a larger planter that will remain accessible on all sides. The work will be undertaken with the involvement of Edible York.
- Added measures to prevent inconsiderate parking on footways to maintain free passage of pedestrians (including mobility-aid users)/cycle flow and to prevent damage to the footways. This will largely be achieved by introducing bollards to prevent vehicle overrun.
- Road resurfacing to be coordinated with planned maintenance work.
